What Is Full Truckload Shipping?
Full truckload (FTL) shipping dedicates an entire trailer to a single shipment. Your freight moves directly from origin to destination with no terminal stops, transfers, or cross-docking along the way. A full truckload typically means 24 to 30 pallets or up to roughly 44,000 to 45,000 pounds in a 48 or 53 foot trailer, though the right threshold depends on your equipment type and commodity. Because the trailer is yours alone, FTL delivers faster transit times, less handling, and a lower risk of damage or loss than shared-trailer alternatives, which is why it's the workhorse mode for high volume, high value, and time sensitive freight.FTL vs. LTL: Which Is Right for Your Freight?
Less than truckload (LTL) shipping combines freight from multiple shippers in one trailer, with each paying for the space they use. It's the economical choice for smaller shipments, typically one to six pallets, but it involves terminal transfers, more handling, and longer transit.
Choose full truckload when your shipment approaches 10 or more pallets, when transit time matters, when your freight is fragile or high value and should not be handled repeatedly, or when the total weight makes one dedicated truck cheaper than multiple LTL moves. Many shippers are surprised to find FTL wins on price sooner than expected: as LTL shipments grow, a full truckload often becomes the more cost-effective option.
